These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing 3rd-level domain names remained running.
